Ai was born on the Utopia Colony and took shelter under the colony after the First Battle of Mars in 2195. There she met Tenkawa Akito. The Jovian batta attacked the shelter and Tenkawa tried to protect her and the other survivors, but he accidentally Boson Jumped, leaving her behind. Tenkawa brooded over this and the guilt built up within him. At the end of the Jovian-Earth war, Tenkawa discovered that Ai was close enough to him when he jumped to initiate a jump of her own. She was innitially teleported to Mars long ago when the ancients ruled it. The ancients sent her back to 2198, where she met with Ines Fresenjue. Because of heavy Boson activity, Ai was transported to the Martian deserts twenty years in the past where she was found by Nergal scientists and was raised to become Ines Fresenjue. In Japanese, the word "Ai" means love. While Tenkawa has no sexual feelings for Ai, he does have an intense "big brother" form of love. When he couldn't protect her, he felt inadequat and guilty because he believed she was killed on Mars. His inadequacy led to a fear that he couldn't protect anyone causing him to freeze in battle. Once he discovered that Ai was still alive, he fought his way to see her, to make sure she was still alive. But he couldn't make his way to the bottom of the Martian ruins in time to see her before she had to go through the portal to finish her journey to the past. Once Tenkawa knew that she didn't die and that she was indeed alive, he felt as if he could take up the role of protector again, refusing Yurika's request to destroy the Nadesico to destroy the Martian ruins.
