Tenkawa Akito was born on Mars in the Utopia Colony. In the First Battle of Mars, the Utopia Colony was destroyed when a Jovian Tulip crashed onto it. Tenkawa and the other survivors were left stranded in underground shelters. Here he met a young girl named Ai. The Jovians attacked the bunker they had been in, killing everyone. Tenkawa tried to save the survivors but unwillingly Boson Jumped to Earth. On Earth, he tried to live out life as a cook, but was fired because his boss didn't want people "to think that he had a coward pilot" working for him. Tenkawa then met up with Misumaru Yurika as she was heading for Nergal Main Headquarters to take command of the Nadesico. During their initial encounter, neither could remember who the other was. It was only until Tenkawa noticed that Captain Misumaru had dropped a small picture of him that he remembered her. He was then hired on as a cook for the Nadesico when he tried to see Captain Misumaru. Tenkawa then became a part-time pilot after succesfully playing decoy in Ensign Yamada Jiro's Aestivalis to lure the Jovian battle away from the underground dock that housed the Nadesico. He enjoys an old anime show called "Gekiganger 3" that Ensign Yamada introduced to him. Tenkawa has served as a pivitol point for many of Nergal's experiments in Boson Jumping, mainly thanks to the persuasive efforts of Erina Kinjo Won. He still suffers somewhat from battle fright due to his first encounter with the unarmed Jovian mecha in the Martian shelters because he couldn't save any of the survivors.
